Canadians, we heard you! So, we’ve set aside a space to let your voices ring loud and clear at the Connectively Moving Our Dance pre-conference event on January 24 and 25, 2023. dance Immersion is hosting this part of the event, and we’ve got you. This forum gives our community the chance to connect, inform, and develop strategies with a Canadian focus. This two-day event includes discussions, movement sharing, and a presenter showcase specifically geared towards Canadian artists.

The opportunity to let your light shine is now open. We’re looking for ideas and dance works from professional dance artists from across the country to take place during the pre-conference event, as well as the main conference and festival. Each is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your talent and invest in your career, so apply to the artist calls below. We can’t wait to see you there!

CALLS: Connectively Moving Our Dance (Canadian Pre-Conference Events) January 24-25, 2023

Note: These are live, in-person events.

1.Presenter Showcase
: There will be a large group of Canadian and international presenters gathered in Toronto for this event. On Tuesday, January 24, there will be an in-person showcase held for Canadian African Diasporic dance artists to pitch brief works to the gathered presenters. The Presenter Showcase will include a host to introduce each artist. Each artist or company selected will receive 10 minutes total to introduce/pitch their work and have the work performed on stage. This can be a previously-presented work, a new work, or a work in progress. A total of seven (7) artists will be selected for the live Presenter Showcase. A reception will follow the showcase in which artists and presenters can casually network. APPLY HERE

2.Movement Sharing Workshops
: At Connectively, African Diasporic dance artists will be gathered together in person, many for the first time since the pandemic began in 2020. Apply with innovative ideas for movement sharing workshops. These may involve interdisciplinary work, healing arts, and other forms of movement. The length of each workshops is not to exceed 90 minutes. A total of two (2) movement sharing workshops will be selected for the Canadian Connectively event. APPLY HERE

3.Panel and Roundtable Discussions
: As we gather Canadian African Diasporic Artists at Connectively Moving Our Dance, we would like to hear from you about what topics you would like to discuss. The broad topic areas for discussion are:

    • Education and Training in African Diasporic Dance Forms
    • Afrofuturism through a Dance Lens
    • What Does the Canadian Dance Ecology Need for a Bright Future?

You can apply for any topic within these general areas. Definitions: Panel is a conversation between colleagues centered on a topic, question or idea presented to an audience; Roundtable is a forum motivated by a specific topic and the desire to discuss and debate with an audience. Applications must include the discussion idea and up to four (4) panelists/roundtable participants total. Panel and Roundtable presentations are not to exceed 90 minutes in length. A total of three (3) panel / roundtable discussions will be selected for Connectively. APPLY HERE

Eligibility for Connectively Moving Our Dance:

  • Applications for are open to all professional artists residing within Canada or with Canadian citizenship.
  • Dance works for the live presenter showcase are not to exceed a total 10 minutes in length, including artists introducing their work and company. Technical support for sound will be provided; however, no lighting support will be provided for the presenter showcase, nor is lighting design required.
  • All Dance works must fit on a semi-circular thrust stage approximately 38 feet wide x 25 feet deep.
  • Movement Sharing Workshops are not to exceed 90 minutes in length.
  • For Panel and Roundtables, artists should apply with discussion topics and a list of up to four (4) artist participants total. Panel and Roundtable presentations are not to exceed 90 minutes in length.
  • Priority will be given to applicants identifying as Black or African Diasporic.

What You Get in Return:

Selected artists will be provided with the following:

  • Fees to perform in the Presenter Showcase Pitch Session ($1,500 per group), teach a Movement Sharing Workshop ($500 per workshop), or speak on a Panel/Roundtable ($500 per speaker, for a maximum of $2,000 per panel/roundtable).
  • Technical support for sound will be provided for all Connectively events. Slideshow and video elements will be supported for Panels and Roundtables. Minimal lighting support will be provided for the Presenter Showcase.
  • Technical rehearsal for the Presenter Showcase.
  • Marketing and promotion of your Connectively event.


Deadlines and Selection Process:

Applications for Connectively Moving Our Dance will be evaluated by a selection committee of Canadian artists and dance Immersion staff and reviewed based on artistic merit and feasibility within a conference event.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Sunday, August 14, 2022 at 11:59 PM EDT

ADJUDICATION: Monday, August 15 – Friday, August 26, 2022

NOTIFICATIONS: Monday, August 29, 2022

ARTIST ACCEPTANCE DUE: Friday, October 14, 2022


CALLS: IABD Conference & Festival January 26-29, 2023

Canadian Mainstage Showcase (within the IABD Conference & Festival). An international community of Black dance artists will connect with Canadian dance artists, arts workers and supporters at the IABD Conference & Festival. Within the larger IABD Conference & Festival, there will be a Canadian-focused Mainstage Showcase Presentation!

You may apply with a dance work of up to eight (8) minutes in length to be included in the Canadian Mainstage Showcase presentation on January 27, 2023. The work must fit on a semi-circular thrust stage approximately 38 feet wide x 25 feet deep and require minimal technical support.  Current IABD membership is required for submission for this in-person event. APPLY HERE

Artists will be selected through a peer review process. Every application for the IABD Conference & Festival will be evaluated by a selection committee of Canadian and international IABD members and reviewed based on artistic merit and feasibility within a conference and festival event.
