Laurie Townshend is a writer, director, and educator from Toronto, Canada. Raised by a Jamaican mother – the family’s eloquent griot – Laurie learned early on that stories shape us as much as we shape them. Laurie’s works focus on human acts of courage that lead to quiet revolutions, such as The Railpath Hero (2013) and Charley (2016), a documentary connecting the work of civil rights activist Charles Roach to the Black Lives Matter movement. Her latest documentary, A Mother Apart (Top 3 Audience Award HotDocs 2024) delves into the intimate journey of acclaimed Jamaican poet-performer Staceyann Chin as she confronts the lingering trauma of being abandoned by her mother as a child. Through Staceyann’s provocative poetry and unflinching vérité, the film explores themes of resilience, forgiveness, and a daughter’s search for belonging, illuminating how the act of mothering can be a path towards healing and finding one’s true home.
