dance Immersion began in 1994 with a determined Vivine Scarlett working to create more opportunities for Black dance to enrich communities and be enjoyed across Canada. Today, and every day since, dance Immersion recommits to supporting the strength, beauty, diversity, and contribution of African Diasporic dance.
Black art and artists experience barriers sustained by anti-Black racism. Examples include cultural appropriation, reduced access to training and presentation opportunities, and disparaging categorization. Black dance continues to carry the stigma of being less artistically rigorous than other art forms. These are the factors that fed the purpose and mission of dance Immersion; these are our reasons for being. Until these factors are no longer valid, our programs, services and existence will continue to be vital.
dance Immersion experiences considerable success in connecting dance artists across Canada and around the world. We have produced 75 stage presentations, over 300 educational events and served more than 2,000 Black Canadian artists to date. We are privileged to have collaborated with so many beautiful artists whose testimonials echo the sentiments that while each greatly appreciates opportunities to work with mainstream presenters, it is through working with dance Immersion that they feel understood, respected, and championed.
Help drive opportunity and inspiration for Canada’s Black dance artists with a donation to dance Immersion as we expand vital residency and performance programming. Donations go directly toward artist fees for presentations, workshops, and residencies.
